Compacted font

Postby Lyn Massey on Sun Feb 28, 2010 4:43 pm

Can anyone recommend a means of pulling out a TL106 (Queen) font that has been dropped and the top has been pushed down and inwards. The stem is still upright and perpendicular. Skirt around the base was also damaged but shouldn't be a problem to repair. Would pressurising the font work and how much pressure could the font safely take?

Best wishes.

I would suggest finding a suitable bolt to fit and pull gently while pressurizing

Lyn. Which Queen? The first three TL106s were so named. The Pork Pie and both versions of the mid 1950s one. If it is a Pork pie then use a mechanical pull because that will not take so very much pressure and anyway the brass is much heavier so I doubt it would work anyway. The round shouldered types however are perhaps the strongest tank Tilley made and will probably stand some serious pressure. Mind you with one of those I would just scrap it and go to my shed and get another. I must have half a dozen in there. You can have one for the postage, be glad to get rid of one. ::Neil::

Hi Doron and Neil,

Thanks for the advice. The lamp is a round shouldered Tilley and not a pork pie. Will try and use a mix of pressure and pulling to see how that works and if it doesn't will just use all the fittings for spares as I'm sure another font minus all the bits will turn up before too long. I've notice that fewer complete Tilleys are now available, either because people have decided to hang on to those they have, or all the ones in good condition have been disposed off. I was going to ask you Neil, I saw a double headed Table Tilley being advertised on eBay some time back. Was it for real, as I'd never heard of them or was it a made up article?

Thanks again for your advice and will let you know how it goes.

Best wishes,

Linda

Hello Lyn. Go to "interesting auctions" forum and there you will find an interesting discussion about these double Tilleys. I hope this helps.
